This weeks article in the Westmeath Examiner will focus on Migraine:
In this week’s article we are going to focus on Migraine as this is a common health condition, affecting about 15% of adults in Mullingar.
There are two types of migraine:
- Migraine with aura is when you have a warning sign, known as aura, before the migraine begins. About a third of people with migraine have this. Warning signs may include visual problems (such as flashing lights) and stiffness in the neck, shoulders or limbs.
- Migraine without aura
There are generally five stages to a migraine attack:
- Pre-headache stage – change in mood/appetite/behavior
- Aura – flashes of light/blind spots/ blurred vision/nausea. This may not occur.
- Headache stage
- Resolution stage – this is when the headache stops
- Recovery stage – exhaustion and weakness
Who is affected by migraines?
Migraines are more common in women than they are in men. Hormones may be the reason why migraines affect more women than men. For example, some women find that migraine attacks are more frequent around the time of their period. However, this association has not been fully proven.
Migraines usually begin in young adults. About 9 in 10 have their first migraine before they are 40 years old. However, it is possible for migraines to begin later in life.
How often do they occur?
Everyone will experience migraines differently. Some people have attacks frequently, up to several times a week. Other people only have a migraine occasionally. It is possible for years to pass between migraine attacks.
Outlook
A migraine can be very disabling and can severely affect your quality of life. Some people need to stay in bed for days at a time.
However, there are effective treatments and methods that can help to prevent migraines, please consult your GP or pharmacist for more advice on this. Most people find ways of managing their migraines so that there is little disruption to their lives.

Staying Healthy at Electric Picnic
Welcome to the new weekly health column by Market Point Pharmacy and Green Road Pharmacy, Mullingar.
With Electric picnic on our doorstep festivals are one of the highlights of the Irish summer. With all festivals most injuries and health complaints can be avoided with better planning. There are a few essentials to bring and also be aware around music festivals.
If you drink alcohol, drink sensibly and stick within the recommended limits. Alcohol dehydrates you, so drink plenty of water between drinks and also the following morning. If it is anyway sunny make sure to take on plenty of fluids throughout the day as the sun can further dehydrate.
For people taking medication, first aiders are not allowed to hand out medication except over-the-counter remedies such as paracetamol. If you’re on any medication, bring your supply with you and take it as prescribed. Have a pack of plasters and some disinfectant for minor grazes and cuts, and medication for headaches and stomach upsets.
Due to the large number of festival goers, festivals can be hotspots for bacteria and various infectious agents. Make sure to always have antibacterial hand gel and wet wipes as there may be nowhere to wash hands after a trip to the infamous portaloos`.
Have earplugs! A lot of people oversee the importance of bringing earplugs. Noise levels around the stages at music festivals can reach 110 decibels or more. That’s like standing next to a jackhammer drilling into concrete. Spending too long listening to loud music can cause permanent damage to your ears, resulting in problems such as tinnitus and hearing loss.
Above all like any festival be sensible and enjoy yourself. Be prepared and be aware. For further information call into pharmacists John or Robert at either Market Point or Green Road Pharmacy’s or visit www.marketpointpharmacy.com for videos and more information.

September at Market Point Pharmacy and Green Road Pharmacy, Mullingar, is Asthma awareness month.
On Thursday 15 th at 8pm we are giving a talk on Asthma with the Irish Asthma Society in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar. No booking is required just turn up on the night.
Robert will be holding an inhaler technique clinic in Green Road Pharmacy on September 15th. We have got our hands on a device that measures how well an inhaler is used. Firstly we ask the patient to use their inhaler as they normally would, we then show them how to use their inhaler more efficiently, this is demonstrated on the device showing a better penetration of the drug in the lungs.
John is running the same clinic in Market Point Pharmacy on Friday 16th September.
There is no charge for either the clinic or the talk. Everyone is welcome.
